BALTIMORE, MD — Forty-five Pennsylvania Young Farmers attended the 2008 National Young Farmer Educational Association (NYFEA) Institute in Baltimore, Maryland in early December. Over 200 young farmer members from across the nation participated in the four-day institute.
Additionally, over 100 young people took part in the one-day Young Ag Leaders Event (YALE), this year featuring training by representatives of Disney. Pennsylvania Young Farmers Association (PYFA) sponsored the entire FFA State Leadership team in addition to the two youth who serve on their Board as well as Amanda Harrington, a Penn Manor FFA member who was awarded a stipend by PYFA. Youth Board members are Christine Oellig, Lebanon County, and Britney Marsh, Cumberland County.
The three young women also took part in the NYFEA Ag Communication Contest sponsored by John Deere designed to encourage young people to speak out about agriculture. Oellig and Marsh were featured in a video highlighting the goals of the contest. Oellig represented Pennsylvania, after having been named the Spokesperson for Agriculture at PYFA’s 2008 Winter Conference.
Jeff McClelland stepped down as national president of NYFEA and will continue to serve for one year as past president. Carol Corman, Center County, was elected to serve a one-year term as national secretary.
The Institute featured tours of Baltimore, Washington and Annapolis, as well as tours to the agriculturally rich Eastern Shore of Maryland, and northern Maryland and southern Pennsylvania.
Richard Waybright, Mason Dixon Farms, Adams County, and one of the tour hosts was recognized during the Salute to Maryland Agriculture luncheon on Saturday, December 13. Mason-Dixon Farms milks nearly 2,400 cows, using robotic units to help decrease labor costs and increase efficiency and milk production. They have long used a methane digester to turn waste from the operation to electricity. Waybright is a member of the Gettysburg Chapter of PYFA.
